Job Summary

The successful applicant will be engaged as a locally engaged staff member by the Australian High Commission, Nicosia.

The successful candidate’s terms and conditions of employment will be governed by the laws of Cyprus.

Please be advised that the Australian High Commission, Nicosia does not assist with relocation. Any costs associated with taking up the position would be the responsibility of the successful candidate.

 

About the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally.  This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas development program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas. The Department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government.  DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the Position

Under broad direction, this position works as part of a small team to undertake research on political and economic matters and to manage the planning and implementation of the Australian High Commission’s public diplomacy strategy, including social media, to advance Australian interests in Cyprus.

Key responsibilities of the position include but are not limited to:

  • Undertake research and analysis in support of the High Commission’s priorities and objectives.
  • Prepare analytical reports and briefing material on political and economic developments in Cyprus, including north Cyprus.
  • Represent the Australian High Commission at events, conferences and manage representational activities as directed.
  • Develop and maintain networks with a wide range of key stakeholders across Cyprus including local government officials, international organisations, academic institutions, private sector and civil society.
  • Develop, implement and coordinate the Australian High Commission’s Public Diplomacy Strategy, and Economic Diplomacy Strategy, including management of the annual program and budget.
  • Organise and coordinate a range of public diplomacy events and assist with hosting receptions.
  • Prepare reports and other written product on events and public diplomacy activities.
  • Manage and coordinate Australian Alumni engagement.
  • Manage the Australian High Commission’s website and public outreach strategies, including publishing content on social media platforms, media monitoring and press liaison.
  • Provide general translation and interpreting services as requested.
  • Provide executive support to the Head of Mission and Deputy Head of Mission as required.
  • Manage, as required, and under direction from DHOM and HOM, other Locally Engaged positions.

 

Qualifications/Experience

  • Relevant work experience in public relations, international relations, communications, media and/or event management.
  • Well-developed judgement, research and critical analysis skills.
  • The ability to liaise effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders and create a strong network.
  • Demonstrated experience planning, managing and executing high-level events.
  • Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English/Greek (essential) and Turkish (highly desirable) including the ability to interpret and translate as required.
  • Sound interpersonal skills, attention to detail and an ability to work as part of a team and under limited direction to achieve outcomes.

 

Other Requirements

  • Ability to travel to and work in the Australian High Commission’s second office in the area not under the effective control of the Republic of Cyprus, should the need arise.
  • A valid residence permit/citizenship allowing employment in Cyprus.

                                                                                                                                       

Selection Criteria

A. Demonstrated experience in public relations, international relations, or communications

B. Ability to undertake high quality research and analysis on complex subject matter and to draft accurate and timely policy advice and reporting for senior officials.

C. Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Greek, with the ability to use these communication skills to build networks with a range of stakeholders.

D. Strong planning and organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and direct the workflow of a team.

E. Experience organising key high-level events, and the ability to represent the High Commission.
